世界のカイロプラクティック事情

カイロプラクティックは世界最大の自然医学です。米国を始め、カナダ、南米、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、南アフリカ、ヨーロッパ諸国など、世界約６０カ国に普及しています。米国では、米国公認カイロプラクティック専門学校で５年間の医学教育を受けると、ドクター・オブ・カイロプラクティック(D.C.)という正式な医師資格が授与されます。その他、世界６０カ国以上において、公的なカイロプラクティック医師資格として認定されています。

私が自然療法に興味を持ったきっかけは、高校時代にさかのぼります。高校２年生の頃から急に視力が悪くなり、病院に行ったところ、「あなたは円錐角膜です。」と診断されたのです。病状が進行すると失明する危険のある病気です。治療法の１つとして角膜移植手術があります。眼科の医師に手術について聞いてみると、「手術をしたからといって未来が急に明るくなるなんて考えてはダメです。」と言われたのです。医師の言葉に当時ひどく傷ついたことを今でも覚えています。視力低下に伴い大学受験をあきらめ、アメリカに留学します。アメリカでは幸運にも腕のいい眼科医に出会う機会に恵まれ、角膜移植手術について再び聞いてみたのです。すると、「それでは３ヵ月後に手術しましょうか、視力も１．０くらいまで戻るかもしれませんよ。」と言われたのです。日本の医療とアメリカの医療の違いの大きさに驚かされたものです。視力は言われたとおり１．０まで回復し、日本の眼科医に言われていた手術の副作用もほとんど起こらなかったのです。私の場合は、不幸にも日本の医療の恩恵を受けることができず、幸運にもアメリカの医療の恩恵を受けることが出来ただけなのかも知れません。しかし、「自分の体を守るためには自分で医学知識を学ぶしかない。」という気持ちを強く持つようになったのです。そして特に予防医学にもともと興味を持っていたので、アメリカ発祥の科学的な根拠に基づく自然医学であるカイロプラクティックを学びたいと思ったのです。アメリカでは自然療法の分野が急速な勢いで成長しています。手術や薬に対して不安に感じる人が増えてきているのです。今後、患者の自然療法に対する期待は更に大きくなることでしょう。
