便秘の中には大腸の内視鏡検査などが必要な場合があります。内視鏡検査とは肛門から大腸に管状のファイバースコープを入れて、直接大腸の中を観察する検査です。直接肛門から指を入れて、直腸の壁を触診する直腸指診もあります。そのほかに血液検査とレントゲン検査などがあります。

慢性的な便秘は大腸がんあるいは直腸がんのリスクを高める可能性があります。大腸の内視鏡検査を受けたことがなくて、５０歳以上の高齢者の場合には、大腸の内視鏡検査を受ける必要があります。若い人の場合には、直腸の内視鏡検査だけでも十分な場合もあります。下記に検査が必要な便秘の症状を紹介します。

• 便に血が混じる。（便検査で潜血が見られる場合も含まれる。）
• 鉄欠乏製貧血である。
• 体重が減少している。
• いままで問題なかったのに、最近になって便秘が起こっている。
• 直腸が脱出している。
• 便の太さが変化している。
• 腸の狭窄を疑わせる症状がある。
